Imagine a building that appears to float on water, shimmering like a pearl. That is the vision behind the new Dubai Museum of Art, unveiled by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum over the weekend. Developed by the Al-Futtaim Group and designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the museum is located on an island in Dubai Creek, offering a dramatic new icon for the city’s skyline.

The architecture draws inspiration from two enduring symbols of Dubai’s heritage: the sea and the pearl. Its curved external shell encloses a circular exhibition hall, symbolising unity, discovery and continuity. At its core, a cylindrical opening lets natural light flood the space, evoking the gentle glow of a pearl. Rising five storeys above the water, the museum blends local culture with a modern architectural sensibility, making it both a visual landmark and a cultural statement.

Inside, visitors will find adaptable exhibition galleries across the first and second floors, a restaurant and VIP lounge on the third floor, and support spaces on the ground and basement levels.

Beyond the exhibitions, the museum will host artist talks, panel discussions, educational programmes and art fairs, its purpose-built event spaces enabling a year-round cultural calendar. The focus of the collection will be modern and contemporary art that reflects Dubai’s diversity and creative energy.

The intent is for the museum to become a global meeting point for artists to exchange ideas, collaborate and celebrate creativity. It speaks to the broader ambition of Dubai to be recognised as a creative capital, a place where artists, designers and innovators from around the world can come together, collaborate and shape the future of the creative economy.
