Sagrada Família Reaches Full Height as Gaudí’s Vision is Finally Realised

Only months ago, reports stated that Barcelona’s Sagrada Família was approaching the final phase of its construction. Now, we revisit Gaudí’s masterpiece as it reaches one of the most significant milestones in its long history.

In late February 2026, the basilica officially reached its full architectural height of 172.5 metres after the installation of the final element atop the central Tower of Jesus Christ, a monumental cross that now crowns the structure above the Barcelona skyline.

For a building that first broke ground in 1882, the moment carries remarkable symbolism. More than 140 years after construction began, Antoni Gaudí’s masterpiece has finally reached the height he envisioned, making it the tallest church building in the world.

The central tower itself sits at the heart of Gaudí’s intricate architectural composition, surrounded by towers dedicated to the Evangelists and the Virgin Mary. With its completion, the basilica’s vertical composition, arguably the most recognisable aspect of Gaudí’s design, has now fully emerged.

Yet even with the skyline-defining tower complete, the story of the Sagrada Família is not quite finished. While the main structural works are expected to culminate around the centenary of Gaudí’s death in 2026, additional sculptural elements and the monumental Glory Façade may take years more to complete.

What makes the project so extraordinary is not just its scale, but its continuity. Generations of architects, artisans and engineers have carried Gaudí’s vision forward, blending traditional craft with modern construction technologies to bring the basilica closer to completion.

After more than a century of construction, the Sagrada Família now stands not simply as an unfinished project, but as one of the most remarkable architectural achievements ever attempted.
