Insurers Increase Private Asset Exposure as Institutional Investors Pull Back

Property and casualty insurers are increasing allocations to private assets, including private credit, private equity, real estate and infrastructure, even as many pension funds, endowments and other institutional investors take a more cautious approach.

The shift reflects a growing search for higher returns and is positioning insurers as an increasingly important source of capital for private markets globally.

According to the report, major insurers including Allstate, Liberty Mutual and Nationwide now allocate more than 15% of their portfolios to alternative assets, while others have more than doubled their exposure over the past decade. As traditional investors slow new commitments, insurers are helping sustain capital flows into private market strategies across sectors and regions.

While the companies highlighted are primarily U.S. based, the implications are global. Private capital continues to play a growing role in funding real estate, infrastructure and corporate lending markets worldwide, with insurers emerging as a key driver of investment activity across multiple asset classes.

The trend also comes with increased scrutiny, as regulators and market participants monitor liquidity and valuation risks associated with less liquid private investments.
