Five Extraordinary Buildings Set to Define Global Architecture in 2026
A new wave of landmark architecture is set to emerge across the globe in 2026. From cultural institutions to transformative infrastructure, these projects reflect how cities are investing in buildings that shape identity, public life and future urban development.
→ Shanghai Grand Opera House | Shanghai
Designed by Snøhetta, the Shanghai Grand Opera House introduces a striking spiral form that wraps around the structure and extends to the rooftop. Visitors will be able to walk along the building itself, transforming the opera house into a public promenade as much as a performance venue.
Inside, the complex will house multiple performance spaces, including a major auditorium designed for world class opera and symphonic productions.
→ David Geffen Galleries at LACMA | Los Angeles
The new David Geffen Galleries form the centrepiece of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s transformation. Designed by Peter Zumthor, the sweeping structure stretches across Wilshire Boulevard as a horizontal building elevated above the street.
The museum’s layout removes traditional chronological displays, allowing artworks from different cultures and time periods to coexist in a more fluid and contemporary exhibition environment.
→ V&A East Museum | London
Located in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the V&A East Museum is part of London’s expanding East Bank cultural district. Designed by O’Donnell + Tuomey, the project aims to become a major centre for creativity, design and public engagement.
The museum will host exhibitions, performances and educational programs that connect fashion, music, design and contemporary culture.
→ Lucas Museum of Narrative Art | Los Angeles
Founded by filmmaker George Lucas, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art explores storytelling across visual media, from illustration and photography to film and digital art. The building itself, designed by MAD Architects, takes on a flowing organic form that appears to hover above the ground.
Its sculptural design reflects the museum’s focus on imagination and narrative, turning architecture itself into part of the experience.
→ Danjiang Bridge | New Taipei City
Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the Danjiang Bridge will become one of the world’s longest single mast cable stayed bridges. The project combines engineering innovation with a sculptural architectural presence across the Tamsui River.
Beyond its visual impact, the bridge will significantly improve regional connectivity along Taiwan’s northern coast while helping reduce congestion across existing transport routes.
As cities evolve, architecture is increasingly expected to do more than house activity. These projects demonstrate how buildings and infrastructure are becoming civic landmarks, cultural platforms and symbols of future urban ambition.
