🇪🇸 Barcelona’s La Sagrada Família Set to Reign as Europe’s Tallest Church

Antoni Gaudí’s La Sagrada Família, the endlessly evolving basilica that defines Barcelona’s skyline, is finally approaching the culmination of a project that began in 1882.

After more than 140 years of meticulous construction and the master architect’s death in 1926, the church is poised to achieve an extraordinary architectural milestone, upon completion in 2026. The landmark's central Tower of Jesus Christ will rise to around 172 m, surpassing Germany’s Ulm Minster to stand as the tallest church in Europe and furthermore, the tallest worldwide.

This ascent to record-breaking height isn’t simply a numerical feat, it’s a testament to Gaudí’s visionary fusion of Gothic and Art Nouveau forms. Every element of the basilica, from its organic, nature-inspired facades to the spiraling geometry of its spires, speaks to an architectural language that continually inspires scholars and visitors alike.

While parts of the basilica have been accessible to the public for decades, the final phase of construction, a central spire towering above its 17 other pinnacles, will soon complete Gaudí’s audacious vision. The result will not only reshape Barcelona’s skyline but also cement La Sagrada Família’s legacy as a pinnacle of European ecclesiastical architecture.
