Australia’s First New Cathedral in Over a Century Is Being Designed for How People Gather Today
After more than 100 years, a new cathedral is being planned in Sydney’s north shore suburb of Waitara. Designed by London-based Níall McLaughlin Architects in collaboration with Hayball, the project rethinks the role of contemporary religious architecture.
According to the practice, the project will be Australia’s first Roman Catholic cathedral in over a century to be masterplanned from the outset.
Set within a 7.7-hectare precinct, the development will also integrate education and community services, supporting around 250,000 Catholics across 26 parishes within the Diocese of Broken Bay, spanning Sydney’s Central Coast, North Shore, and Northern Beaches.
The design draws on traditional cathedral language but focuses on proportion, structure, and light over ornament.
A vaulted timber interior references Gothic precedents with restraint, while controlled light creates a gradual, processional experience.
Mass timber introduces both durability and warmth, aligning with the long-term intent traditionally associated with cathedral architecture.
This is less about a singular building and more about what it represents. The construction of a new cathedral, after more than 100 years, marks a rare moment of long-term commitment to civic and spiritual infrastructure.
The project, soon to be submitted for formal approval, will be delivered over several years, supported by a combination of institutional church funding and a dedicated fundraising campaign.
